Anatomy of the underground system in Vernonia grandiflora Less. and V. brevifolia Less. (Asteraceae) BABT
Hayashi,Adriana Hissae; Appezzato-da-Glória,Beatriz.
This work dealt with the anatomy of the underground system in Vernonia grandiflora Less. and V. brevifolia Less. (Vernonieae; Asteraceae), two perennial geophytes, to elucidate their ability to sprout in the Brazilian Cerrado conditions. V. grandiflora, a subshrubby species, possessed a thickened underground system constituted by a xylopodium and many tuberous roots. The xylopodium had stem and root structure and its buds were axillary or originated from the cortical parenchyma proliferation. The tuberous roots produced by this organ were adventitious and accumulated inulin-type fructans mainly in the cortical parenchyma. The thickened underground system of V. brevifolia, an herbaceous species, was a tuberous primary root whose buds originated from the...

Mulches for yacon cultivation Horticultura Brasileira
Oliveira,Fabio Luiz; Venturim,Cristiano Henrique P; Silva,Diego Mathias N; Quaresma,Mateus Augusto L; Dalvi,Leandro P.
ABSTRACT In Brazil, studies on commercial exploitation of yacon are still scarce. A growing interest in this vegetable has demanded some researches on this crop cultivation management, though. Considering that yacon has a long cycle, which exposes the soil, studies on mulch management will be of great value. We used a randomized complete block design, with five replicates, under different soil mulches for yacon cultivation: two plastic film covers (black and double-sided), four mulches (corn husk, coffee husk in three levels), and the control (bare soil). Plastic mulch can be used for yacon cultivation, considering that the double sided plastic provides greater production of total roots; however, the same yield of the most valued roots was obtained using...

Some biological aspects of the weed Lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) Planta Daninha
Sohrabi Kertabad,S.; Rashed Mohassel,M.H.; Nasiri Mahalati,M.; Gherekhloo,J..
Lesser celandine (Ranunculaceae) is a perennial weed with tuberous root. Tubers are the most important means of reproduction and dispersion of this weed. In recent years, it has spread into wheat fields in Western Iran, mainly in the Lorestan province. A series of experiments were conducted to determine cardinal temperatures and to study the effects of pre-chilling, temperature fluctuations, tuber size, freezing and drying on germination of the tubers, as well as the effect of planting depth on sprouting of the tubers. The results obtained showed that the highest percentage of germination occurred when tubers were stored for more than 2 weeks at 4 or 8 ºC. The optimum temperature for germination differed in large and small tubers (8 and 14oC,...
